I've had my Lucky Plant about 8 mos...it's healthy and growing so I decided to transplant to a large vase. That's when I'm noticing a clear, jelly type substance all in the roots...no smell to it but not sure what it is. After my research decided it shouldn't be there so I'll try to rinse it off. Also I noticed there is a piece of styrofoam to absorb water I guess was used when first shipped to retail store....never taken out so maybe that caused the problem???
Would I just use small river rocks when repotting in water???
Appreciate any feedback.

I don´t know, what this jelly substance could be, but if you repot your bamboo you sould leave out this piece of styrofoam. In my opinion these styrofoams cause more problems (mould a.s.o.) than they help (reservoir for water).
Small, clean riverrocks are quiet enough for the lucky bamboo!
A kind of hydroponic system would be better for the lucky bamboo, I think! And it doesen´t have to be expensive if you look and compare. If you have no experience with hydroponics, you should use all components from one company (substrate and fertilizer)!
A kind of culture which is really working reliable is Seramis. Notice: This is no promotion for this product (in my opinion it´s much too expensive) but I´ve potted some Luckies in Seramis for years and they are doing well!
But I don´t know whether it is available in the USA. It´s a clay-granulate and looks like cat litter (I think it´s nearly cat litter, because the company also produces cat-litter) |

Hello,
I am a guest here, and we are a wholesaler of lucky bamboo in Atlanta, GA. The jelly substance is a kind of jelly to keep the root moist. Since these kind of plants are imported from other nations, a substance is required to keep them moist. Water would be a problem because it can spill and cause damage to other products. Rinsing it off or keep the jelly substance in there does not really matter, but I recomment keep it in there and take the styrofoam off.
Thanks~ |
