Is there a website or somewhere on this site where I can find general growing information with regards to lighting cycle, intensity along with average rates of growth for this plant. I purchased a small one approximatly 3 months ago and have gotten maybe 5-8 cm of growth. Also, any ideas on how i can train them to grow in the spirals without an extreme amount of work involved (Im sure there must be a trick to this that I am not thinking of.)

There are no general information-sites in English-language on this site until now, because it´s too much work for me (alone) to translate the German sites!
If we can get users who will help me, it will be done!
If you got a growth of 5-8 cm within three month, you are on the right way. Light and temperature must be right for such a growing.
In short:
- the more light, the merrier!
- the more ambient temperature, the merrier!
- the more air moisture, the merrier!
These are the most important growing tips for Lucky Bamboo, independent of the growing substratum.
I think there´s no way to train them to grow in spirals. Spirals are made with restraining the Lucky Bamboo, like some people do it with Bonsais (I don´t know the English Word for this method).
I do not recommend any “rape” of the Lucky Bamboo! |

| I live in sunny florida so that may be the reason. I was really hoping that the shoots would harden like the main stalks in order to train them into spirals, Ive gotten a few kinks in already but as you said it doesnt seem to be callousing at all. Thanks for your help though! |

This is incorrect. The spirals are made by keeping the lucky bamboo in a mostly dark area (i.e. a box), with the plant exposed to light on only one side. This causes the stalk to grow toward the light. The plant is rotated as it grows to achieve the spiraled effect.
I highly doubt that the wiring techniques used in bonsai training would be effective with a lucky bamboo. That techniqure requires that a flexible stem/trunk be wired into the desired shape until its own growth eventually holds the shape. As lucky bamboos are not so flexible as this, it wouldn't work. |
